Spectrum Internet Troubleshooting Guide

When your Spectrum internet stops working, the first step is not to fix it. The first step is finding out what is wrong. A loose cable, a crowded WiFi channel, an old laptop, and a real outage all look the same at first. Webpages stop loading, and all you know is that the internet is not working.

This Spectrum internet troubleshooting guide tells you what to check, and in what order. Most problems are solved in the first few steps.

Read This First If You Have Spectrum Fiber

Spectrum says on its own support pages that fiber customers should not touch the back of the modem, because the fiber cable can be damaged. Spectrum also says manual troubleshooting should not be attempted with fiber equipment.

If you are a fiber customer:

  • Never unplug or re-seat the cables at the back of the modem.
  • Restart your modem from your Spectrum account instead. The steps are below.
  • If that does not work, call Spectrum customer support rather than working on the equipment yourself.

Everything in this guide that involves unplugging a modem is for coax customers only.

Not sure which equipment you have? Spectrum’s guide to modems, routers, and wireless adapters will tell you.

How to Identify Your Spectrum Internet Problem

Before you change anything, find out which problem you are facing. This saves a lot of time and points you to the right fix.

Try a Different Device

If you were using WiFi on your laptop, try the same thing on your phone. Turn off mobile data first, then open any webpage.

  • If the internet works on your phone, the problem is your laptop, not your Spectrum service.
  • If nothing works on any device, the problem is your modem, your router, or Spectrum’s service.

A Complete Outage

If none of your devices can reach the internet and your modem’s connection lights never go solid, this usually means a service outage in your area.

Check for an outage before you troubleshoot anything. Spectrum’s own advice is to look for one first. You can:

  • Sign in to your Spectrum account and use the Check Outages option.
  • Open the My Spectrum App on your phone using mobile data, not WiFi.
  • Call Spectrum support at 833-949-0036, open 24 hours a day.
  • Ask a neighbor who also has Spectrum. If their service is down too, it is an area problem and not your equipment.

Support will tell you whether there is an outage or planned maintenance in your area. During an outage, there is nothing to fix at your end, so leave your equipment plugged in and wait.

One thing to keep in mind: Spectrum Home Phone runs through your internet connection. If the internet is down, your home phone is usually down too. Keep a mobile phone ready for calls you cannot miss.

Slow Internet Speeds

Your internet works, but everything takes time. A video plays but buffers too much, or a page loads but slowly.

This usually points to your WiFi, your device, or too many devices using the connection at once. Spectrum also names the age of the device, the software on it, and viruses or malware as things that affect speed.

So keep your device and its software updated, and make sure it is free of viruses.

Weak WiFi

Your internet is fine near the modem or router, but it slows down when your device is far from it. This is a coverage problem.

Spectrum says your best signal is within 125 feet of the router with nothing in between. Walls and metal cut that distance down.

Frequent Disconnections or Error Messages

The internet works, then drops, then comes back on its own. Spectrum lists this as a reason to troubleshoot your modem. Follow the restart steps below.

How to Restart Your Spectrum Modem and Router

Restarting is the most useful step in this guide, and the order matters. The modem has to connect to Spectrum’s network before the router can pass a working connection to your devices.

Steps to Restart a Spectrum Modem

Only coax customers should restart the modem by hand. Spectrum says manual troubleshooting should not be attempted with fiber equipment, so fiber customers should use the account method below.

  1. Unplug the power cord from the back of the modem.
  2. If you have a Spectrum Home Phone with battery backup, take the battery out as well.
  3. Wait 1 minute.
  4. Unplug the power cord from the WiFi router.
  5. Wait 1 more minute, then put the battery back in if you removed one.
  6. Reconnect the power to the modem.
  7. Wait at least 2 minutes until the lights come on. Spectrum says the lights turn on gradually, which confirms the modem has power and is connected to the internet.
  8. Reconnect the power to the WiFi router and wait 2 minutes while it finishes starting up.
  9. Open your browser and try two or three different webpages.

Note: Do not shorten the waiting times. Reconnecting the router too early is the most common reason a restart seems not to work.

If you have a combined modem and router, which Spectrum calls a gateway, skip the router steps and restart the single unit.

Restart from Your Spectrum Account

If you do not want to handle the cables, you can restart your equipment from your account. This is the method Spectrum directs fiber customers to, and it is easier for everyone else.

Follow the steps below to restart your modem using the Spectrum website:

  1. Sign in to your Spectrum account at spectrum.net.
  2. Select the Services tab, then the Internet sub-tab.
  3. Choose your equipment from the list.
  4. If you see a Connection Issue status next to your equipment, select Troubleshoot.
  5. Select Restart Equipment next to the device.
  6. Select Restart Equipment again to confirm.

Your equipment will begin restarting. Once it is done, check whether the internet is working.

You can do the same thing from the My Spectrum App on your phone, which helps when your internet is down and you are on mobile data.

Keep in mind that some equipment cannot be restarted from your account and must be restarted by hand.

Restart the Router Using Its Button

You can also restart the router with the reset button on the back. Find the button, then press and hold it for five seconds.

Hold it for five seconds only. Holding it longer can clear the router’s settings instead of restarting it. That erases your WiFi name and password, and you would have to reconnect every device in your home. Five seconds, then let go.

How to Confirm the Restart Worked

Wait until the modem’s connection lights are solid. Then open two or three different webpages, not just one. If they all load, your connection is working.

A single site failing is a problem with that website, not with your connection.

If the Restart Did Not Work

  • Lights never go solid: Check your cables, then call Spectrum.
  • Lights are solid, but there is no internet: Check your cables, then test a computer plugged straight into the modem with an Ethernet cable.
  • Internet works but is slow or patchy: The problem is your WiFi, your device, or your plan.

Check Modem, Router, and Cable Connections

A loose or damaged cable can cause problems that look like many other issues. Cables are easy to check. If you have fiber service, skip the modem cable steps below and restart your modem using the account.

Coax Cable

This is the round cable that screws into the wall. Tighten it by hand at both the wall and the modem. Finger-tight is enough.

Ethernet Cable (Modem to Router)

Spectrum says to push the plug into the port until you hear a click. Then look at the internet light on your router.

Ethernet Cable (Router to PC)

Push it in until it clicks. Then check the LAN lights on your router.

Power Cords

Make sure each cord is pushed in firmly at the device and at the outlet. Try a different outlet too. If your modem is plugged into a power strip, plug it straight into the wall to test it.

Battery Backup

If you have Spectrum Home Phone with a backup battery, Spectrum’s restart steps ask you to take the battery out and put it back in. Learn more: Spectrum Voice battery backup.

Splitters

If your coax cable runs through a splitter, connect the modem straight to the wall outlet to test it. Splitters can make your signal weaker.

Signs of Damage

Look for bends, cuts, or crushed spots on the cables. Also check for bent center pins and green or white buildup on the connectors.

Heat

If any of your equipment gets very hot, stop using it and call Spectrum.

What the Lights Should Look Like

Light patterns vary by equipment. Check the label on your equipment, or look at your device’s user manual.

EquipmentWhat You Should See
Modem after a restartThe connection light is solid
Modem while starting upLights turn on one by one, then settle.
Router internet lightIt should be on if the cable to the modem is plugged in tightly.
Router LAN lightIt should be on when a computer is connected via an Ethernet cable.

If your router’s internet light is not turning on, the problem is between the router and modem.

How to Reset Your Router

Resetting a router to factory settings is not the same as restarting it.

  • A restart turns the router off and back on.
  • A factory reset erases all your settings.

Your custom WiFi name and password will be gone, and you will need to reconnect every device in your home. Any guest network or port forwarding setup will also be erased.

Spectrum says to reset only in one case: when the router’s IP address was changed, and you no longer know it. In all other cases, restart the router instead. Try the five-second button press or the account restart first.

Buying New Equipment

Do not buy a new modem or router until you know which one is causing the problem. A wired speed test can tell you in about five minutes.

If you rent your equipment from Spectrum and it stops working, Spectrum can replace it. You do not need to buy a new one.

One exception: if your router uses 802.11 N and your plan is faster than 300 Mbps, your router is holding back your speed. In this case, a better router will fix the problem.

When to Contact Spectrum Support

Some problems cannot be fixed at home. Knowing this early can save you hours.

Contact Support If:

  • Your modem’s connection lights do not turn solid after a full restart and the full waiting time.
  • A cable, connector, or wall outlet is damaged or has buildup on it.
  • Your equipment gets very hot.
  • Your wired speed test stays below your plan’s speed, even after you checked the cables and restarted.
  • Your internet keeps dropping, and you have a record of when it happens.
  • You have fiber service with a hardware problem. Spectrum tells fiber customers not to fix these on their own.
  • A device needs a reset that cannot be done from your account. Spectrum says this is true for some devices.

What to Have Ready

Your call will go much faster if you have:

  • Your wired and WiFi speed test results
  • The speed your plan should give you
  • What your modem lights are doing right now
  • Your ZIP code
  • When the problem happens and how long it lasts
  • What you have already tried

Frequently Asked Questions

Most of the time, it is one of these four things: an outage in your area, a modem that lost its connection, a loose cable, or a problem with just one device. Check for an outage first. If all your devices are down, restart your modem and router. If only one device is down, fix that device.
